Windrush Day 22 June 2021

Windrush Day always provides us with a fantastic opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions people of Caribbean descent have made to this country.

22 June 2021 will mark the fourth national Windrush Day and 73 years since the SS Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex in 1948 carrying the first Caribbean migrants to the UK to help re-build Britain after the Second World War.

The first group of more than half a million migrants would go on to not only settle in the UK, but make a significant and lasting contribution to its infrastructure, economy, and culture.

Those who settled in Slough found work on the Trading Estate, in the NHS, the National Railways and in the many factories and shops around Slough.

For more information go to the Windrush Day site, by following the link:

Slough Libraries has books describing the inspiring stories of the Windrush generation. You can now come into our Libraries and browse and borrow books for 30 minute sessions Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm.

The press cuttings below are from the Slough Observer newspaper, dates vary from years 1965 and 1966. These highlight just a snippet of the contributions made by the Windrush generation to Slough town.

Slough Libraries has bound copies of the Slough Observer and Slough & Windsor Express kept at The Curve. If you want to browse these historical archives then email us first at library@slough.gov.uk
