The Council’s Public Health Team and Leisure team launch #Fit2FightCovid

The council’s public health team and leisure team have launched a new physical activity campaign today called #Fit2FightCovid.

Emerging evidence has linked obesity with worse outcomes of coronavirus. In July 2020 Public Health England (PHE) published a new report entitled “Excess Weight and COVID-19” .This report provided a summary of insight from new evidence on the links between coronavirus and excess weight. PHE summarised the report by saying that “evidence suggests excess weight is associated with an increased risk of the following for COVID-19: a positive test, hospitalisation, advanced levels of treatment (including mechanical ventilation or admission to intensive or critical care) and death.

Evidence is clear on the benefits of physical activity and moving more, specifically for: 1) Contributing towards reducing obesity and maintaining a healthy weight 2) Strengthening the immune system and helping to reduce communicable diseases, such as viruses like coronavirus 3) Supporting mental health and helping prevent mental ill health. The primary aims of this new ambitious campaign are to support residents in returning to a “healthy normal” through returning to regular physical activity they enjoy or trying new forms of exercise. As well as supporting residents in protecting themselves from future coronavirus outbreaks and avoiding future complications and mortality from the virus. Councillor Natasa Pantelic, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “Only 20% of Slough residents are identified as “active” (Doing 150min or more a week of physical activity) and over two thirds of the adult population are overweight or obese. Moving more is a great way to help improve mental health, maintain a healthy weight and to help strengthen the immune system. In the light of coronavirus, physical activity is a fantastic way that residents can help protect themselves against future outbreaks”

Slough Libraries and Culture supports the councils public health team in the fight against inactivity and obesity. We hold a wide range of healthy eating books as well as fitness training books. If your GP talks to you about ‘books on prescription’, this simply means that books should be available for you to borrow in relation to improving your mental or physical health or to improve a particular condition. We also normally hold popular seated exercise sessions in all of our branches; these are currently held online and can be viewed on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/sloughlibraries
