Letter Writing Day - 7th December

The 7th of December marks Letter Writing Day, a day designed to encourage people to pick up a pen and write a letter.

Letter writing has been in decline because of smartphones, the Internet and before that, the telephone, but for hundreds of years, it was the only way for people separated by distance to get in touch with one another. Today is a great day to get back to basics and hand-write a letter.

If you do have children the ideal way to get them involved is to write a letter to Santa. This way you can find out what they want for Christmas but they are also writing a letter. It is also a great way to keep them occupied by getting them to include little pictures that way it is something memorable you can keep. So why not, pick up that pen and write a letter… Santa is waiting.

Here are some books containing letters which have had a profound, philosophical, sometimes amusing and personal connection to the writers and readers.

All the books in the images are available through Slough Libraries.

All four of our libraries – The Curve, Britwell, Cippenham and Langley – are partially open for our Click and Collect service and book returns. You just need your Library card and PIN number to use this new service and borrow books which our staff will select for you. For Click and Collect go to this link:
