Let's Read Together - a book group for families

Let's Read Together is a group started by the Slough Caribbean Forum with

Slough Libraries. Are you who is interested in reading and sharing books on Black British history and culture? Want to talk about what you have learned with other families? This group is for you! We had our first meeting last month and had a great turn out.

Meetings are currently once a month, the third Saturday of the month at 10am and the next meeting is Sat 20th February (Book Let's Read Together).

The group is open to ages 6+, divided into 3 age groups, each reading something different and doing different activities.

Under 9’s age group

Before the next meeting we are challenging the under 9s to read about the first two leaders Mary Prince and Seaman William Brown, and draw a picture of them!

9 to 15s age group

Before the next meeting we are challenging the 9-15s to read up to page 34. This covers:

  • The Romans

  • The Tudors

Questions to think about:

  • What did you learn about the Romans and the Tudors?

  • The Aurelian Moors, who were they?

  • What did the Romans look like?

  • What is the Mappa Mundi?

16+ age group

The young people are reading Black and British: A forgotten history by David Olusoga (this is the full edition, rather than the shortened version that the younger kids are reading)

For the 16+ we are challenging them to read the following:

Preface

Introduction

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

The oldest group are encouraged to enjoy reading and let us know what you think of the book so far.

Next session

The next group session is Saturday 20 February at 10am on Zoom – details to follow.

As the group sessions will be once a month we will be creating Telegram (an app) groups for each age group to help you keep in touch and support each other. We will be giving clear information on what this is for and how to use it. Please note it will only be dedicated to the Book Club (More info on Group Chats on Telegram)
