Book Review: A Discovery of Witches By Deborah Harkness

Libraries and Culture Assistant Kausar reviewed Discovery of Witches. Lets read her analysis!

Diana Bishop, an American academic who is studying in Oxford, is well aware that she is a witch but has always refused to accept her powers. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery and so her powers as a witch are repressed. She unwittingly calls up an alchemical manuscript in the course of her research and doesn’t even realise what she has done. In this story, the witches, vampires and daemons all of them are trying to get the manuscript. It turns out that it is only Diana who can access the manuscript.

This manuscript in turn brings Diana and Mathew who is a vampire together. She befriends him and later falls in love with him which turns out to be a whole lot of trouble in it’s own.

I found the story well written and engaging. I think it is a story for all ages. It has modern as well as historical aspects to it. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
