Black Fatherhood - a podcast, a beginning

The final highlight of our Black History Month award winners comes a day late - we intended to share this yesterday but it didn't quite make it.

Corin Vanterpool was one of the 22 people who applied for our grants. He has been involved in a wide variety of groups locally. He is a fully qualified coach and the assistant head coach at Lucky Gloves School of Boxing, which is , as he describes "the best amateur boxing gym in Slough"

Talking about his work, Corin said "We engage with a lot of young men and women, showing them that fundamentals of boxing. Which I strongly believe helps with mental health issues, stress, confidence, self esteem.

Boxing has helped me overcome all of these things, so I know first hand that giving the youth a place to go and use their energy in the correct way is beneficial to both them and the local community."

Corin Vanterpool's application to us was an idea for a podcast - Fatherless Fathers. He wanted to create a podcast where he could highlight his own experiences as a father coming to terms with fatherhood, when his own father had not been as present, particularly in his early life. He also wanted to share other people's experiences and create a platform for people to share and learn together. As many of the judging panel commented, talking about Black fatherhood, what it involves, breaking stereotypes and showing the realities is a really important discussion to be had.

Corin is joined on this first ever podcast by Jonny Britcher, a good friend who is now a founding member for this amazing soon to be series. Watch this space as Corin and Jonny aim to set up as a group, and record monthly podcasts with guests. They mention their future website and social media presence. Watch this space, we'll let you know when it comes into being.
